Beneath The Surface
‘Beneath the Surface’ is a book and sonic-visual installation inspired by the artist’s research in intersectional environmentalism, deep listening, and decoloniality. This composition critically examines knowledging systems, with a particular focus on how narratives are constructed and whose voices are amplified or silenced within academic institutions and beyond.
The installation piece features chapters from the book, printed on suspended transparent surfaces, accompanied by audio passages from the text. For example, “Listen, the Context is Still Colonial,” critiques persistent colonial legacies in academia and advocates for coherent responses to past, present and future crises. Subsequent chapters present themes of surface assumptions versus underlying knowledge(s), emphasizing the potential of deep listening in alignment with Planetary transitions.
This work is an invitation to listen. It exposes contradictions between academic discourse and action, urging a multidimensional approach to perception, eco-liberation, structural change, and the defense of free speech and critical thinking. By emphasizing emancipatory education as a catalyst for transformative justice, 'Beneath the Surface' calls for the dismantling of oppressive systems while nurturing hope and radical imagination. It aims for equity across voices and worldviews, acknowledging the complexities and interdependence of human and more-than-human experiences.
